(Adapted from Curtis et al., 1998 from Abnormal Psychology, 4th Ed. 2001)

Phobias and panic disorders affect as many as 1 in 10 people, costing tens of billions of dollars in treatment and lost productivity. In the U.S. about 30 percent of "heart attack" presentations to emergency services are actually suffering panic attacks. (Discover. April 2002)

In a published study in the Cell journal (2002), Xavier Estivil, a molecular geneticist, contented that nearly every social phobia and panic disorder is rooted in a single stretch of a duplicated region of about 60 genes. (The Sum of All Fears. Discover. April 2002)

Genetics may be involved. Phobics tend to have at least one phobic parent.

Phobias tend to be more intense when depressed.

Phobias arise from irrational fears. A study shows a person has an average of 66,000 thoughs per day, and two-thirds of them are negative. A Wisconsin research study shows that of things worried about, 40 percent never occur, 30 percent are from things in the past, 12 percent are needless health concerns, 10 percent are petty, and only 8 percent are legitimate concerns. (Quick Fix for Everyday Fears. Michael Clarkson. MJF Books, NY)

Virtual Reality (VR) in Phobia Treatment
Virtual reality equipment if already being used in to treat certain phobias. Computer games have become sophisticated enough to move into clinical mainstream, providing VR worlds for a range of phobias eliciting responses that could be used for controlled treatment. (
Computer Games Can Treat Phobias. Will Knight. October 2003. <http://www.newscientitst.com/article.ns?id=dn4292>

Nomophobia !
A recent addition to the list of fears in this phobia-laden world, nomophobia—fear of being out of mobile phone contact. Some suggest it could affect 53% of cell phone users. In 2002, it was reported there were about 1 billion cell phones in use, and by 2009, an estimated 2.6 billion in use. With a world population at about 6.6 billion (July 2007), nomophobia could well top the all-time list of phobias.

Ten Most Common Phobias
1. Arachnophobia - possibly the most common, reported in 50% of women and 10% of men.
2. Social phobia (social anxiety disorder)
3. Aerophobia (fear of flying)
4. Agoraphobia (fear of public places or situations)
5. Claustrophobia (fear of confined spaces)
6. Acrophobia (fear of heights)
7. Emetophobia (fear of vomiting)
8. Carcinophobia (fear of cancer)
9. Brontophobia (fear of thunderstormsz)
10. Necrophobia (fear of death or dead things)
